Following on from my Authorship project of responding to film media through drawing and print, I knew that I wanted to take a similar approach with this Unit X unit. During a tutorial with my tutor, we discussed the new BBC1 series 'The Terror' - a ten part thriller series depicting the perilous Franklin voyage in the Arctic. This was a perfect choice for me as I was already fascinated by stories of adventure and exploration be it through depictions through paintings such as the 'Raft of the Medusa or stories entangled in mystery and mutiny such as the Cook and Blythe voyages.
After watching the BBC1 series ‘The Terror’, I felt a strong connection and was particularly inspired by the depictions of Inuit mythology and culture, a theme shown throughout the series. In particular, I felt encouraged to reflect on the relationship between the British and the Indigenous Inuit tribes. It was fascinating and it ignited a real interest to further research and explore their mythology, beliefs and their encounters with colonialism.
This Unit X project draws on my deep rooted passion for figurines, collectables, relics, ghosts (the mythological) and in particular my passion for ancient civilisations, foreign cultures and mythology. In addition, it draws upon my profound love of the wilderness and exploration, resonating with my own personal experiences. Whether it be from trekking through the vast tundras and mountainous regions of Norway to my many fond memories of exploring the unearthly (extra-terrestrial-esque) landscapes of Iceland.
For this project I will hone in on my drawing and my most favourite print making method: Screen printing. I know that I want to dedicate this project solely as a chance to further ameliorate my drawing and silkscreen skills. Moreover, I must be clear in stating that I want this Unit X drawing and print project to be judged solely on the drawing and prints and the levels of competency and skill displayed – simply a means of visual expression through imaginative drawing and printmaking based on narrative story-telling and imagination.
